Success Stories

Dog Rescue Newcastle has many success stories, which remind us that rescue dogs make the best pets.

Lily

It has been a little over a year since I adopted Lily (originally Sophie) and she has truly become a part of the family; and is definitely treated like a princess!. Lily has settled in beautifully and is now inseparable from my other dog, Poppy. She also visits her "Nana's" often and loves to play with our two other family dogs and lap up all the extra cuddles and attention on offer! Lily and Poppy love running around in the backyard and "rough housing" around the house together. They sleep indoors on my bed with Lily often enjoying the choice of in the bed rather than on top! They are both very spoilt and loved. She still has trouble with her little leg from time to time but this does not diminish her joy in life or her ability to tear around the backyard at a million miles an hour.

She is now a very happy little girl who is gaining her confidence in people back with the help of lots of cuddles from all her extended people family. She is also slowly getting over her fear of men. She absolutely loves my brother and actually drops me like a hot potato as soon as she sees him!

Thank you for doing what you do. There are so many lovely abandoned dogs who desperately need homes out there and you allow people to offer them a home. Kristy

Lucy

I just wanted to check in and let you know how happy we are with Lucy and how grateful we are that she has come in to our lives. After only a week I can't imagine life without her and Tim is just besotted!

She is also the best alarm clock in the world, as she has learned that if she jumps on the bed and tries to lick my face I will usually get up and take her for a walk :) She's surprisingly nimble for a 9 year old! She is such a great little dog and brings a lot of joy into our lives.

Thanks for bringing her to us, and thanks to you and Betty for caring for her so well!

Rocky

Rocky is really relaxing now. I had my mum and aunts over on the weekend for high tea on Sunday afternoon and Rocky and his new brother Snubby once again worked the table very well to optimise their share of the chicken sandwiches! What a team they are - both putting on their sad faces for the girls!!

Both old men were completely knackered after entertaining the ladies all afternoon - so were tucked up in bed by 7.30pm last night

Rocky has really taken to my husband, and wanders around to his side of the bed first thing in the morning just to make sure he is still there.

We have stocked up on tennis balls and think that Rocky would make a great ball boy at the Australina Open in January in Melbourne! He is very focused on developing his ball skills! Rocky has even managed to get Snubby chasing the ball a bit (although Snubby is more of a squeaky toy man).

We are telling everyone we know about how wonderful it has been to rescue a love like Rocky :) It is one of the best things we have done in years.

Willow

It’s now 12 months since Willow came to live with us. I've attached a picture of her sunning herself while I do some gardening. She still spends as much time as possible next to me but will go to others and enjoys a walk sometimes without me.

We adopted Skipper in April, and he is so unlike Willow its almost impossible to imagine 2 dogs with such different personalities. Skip is always on the lookout for mischief, into kitchen bins, shreds paper, books, the corner of a lounge and hunts lizards relentlessly, while Willow is content to laze around. But they now are devoted to one another and if involuntarily separated Skip becomes a little distressed. They are very affectionate to each other, and at least twice a day indulge in mad races around the house - its quite boisterous and they both seem to enjoy it.

Since we aquired Skip, Willow and Skipper have slept downstairs on their own pillows. Yaeee! Thanks so much for letting us have Willow - she's certainly changed our lives. --Vicki

Oscar

Oscar came to us from the Port Stephens Pound as our first foster dog thanks to Dog Rescue Newcastle. It was love at first sight for our family and within days we decided we had to adopt him ourselves. He is just such a happy-go-lucky boy. We already have an 8 year old staffy and they now have a great mateship and play endlessly. He is very spoilt but deserves to be. He loves going walking and chewing raw hide bones.

We would really like to thank Dog Rescue Newcastle once again for bringing Oscar into our lives.

Millie

I've attached a photo of the babies sleeping on the lounge (their favourite position). Daisy and Oscar are beautiful kittens, they are so cuddly and are perfect together, never apart and love attention and affection.

Millie (should be Chubby not Millie). Millie doesn't believe she is an outside dog. She sleeps under a blanket on the bed, lives inside and thinks she is a person.

Cheers. Stephen.

Sandy

Sandy with Brad

Sandy with T-bone steak

My partner Brad and I got Sandy from you in November 2007 and since then we can not imagine life without her.

When she first arrived she was a quiet girl but now she is loud and very playful. She will play with anything with a squeaker in it. During the afternoons she lays on her mink blanket and at night she curls up at the end of the bed.

She is our baby and she comes everywhere with us (including dress up parties). She loves car rides and going to new places.

We took her on a weekend holiday to Sydney to a 4 star Hotel and took a bag handbag so she could come shopping. That night she had her own T Bone for dinner. Everyday Brad and I thank you very much for rescuing Sandy

TOBY
Toby

Toby

Toby

I just wanted to let you know how wonderfully Toby has settled in. He is such an endearing, mischievous little creature. He follows my daughter's every step and sleeps in a basket under her bed (her bed is a half-loft bunk so the underneath is like his little world). He happily takes himself off to bed when my daughter goes and races ahead to leap into his little haven. I collect him for a final wee walk before we all settle for the night.

He has us in fits of laughter every day. He is eating well and full of beans and fun. Even though I head out to work each day I've been splitting his breakfast into two small portions - one when we wake up and another just before we leave an hour later - so that he gets enough to see him through the longer stretch of the day - and ditto his dinner - a little bit when we first get home and some more an hour later.

He and our other dog Cheeks are really getting on well too. On the first day there was a bit of "keep away from my food" warnings and some green-eyed monster re equal cuddles. But as I type they are tearing around the lounge room tossing a small stuffed camel back and forth between them. He copies her every move - like a little shadow puppet.

When I tell her to sit and stay and wait for a treat, he watches closely, then plonks his little bottom down and waits for his treat too. On our walks he sniffs where she sniffs and insists on prancing right at her side

I have spread the word about Dog Rescue Newcaslte. Actually, I often hijack people from the front of our local pet shop and pass on your website details.

Thanks for our lovely little man,
Rose and Radi

GEMMA

Gemma on bed

Gemma on chair

Gemma found herself homeless at 12 years old and nearly got put down. Luckily, she was surrendered to Dog Rescue Newcastle instead and David took her into his home and into his heart.

They are a great example of how senior people can provide homes for senior dogs and both people and dog derive great benefits.

"Gemma is going well and has a walk am and pm. I could not get over how fast she moves. So far no small gifts left indoors and she does enjoy going to the shops in the car. She slept all night without wanting to go out last night. She is eating well morning and evening and enjoys a chicken neck mid morning that lasts just seconds!"

"I have found that she loves her mat but when I use my computer she does not like to sit on the carpet. She prefers a chair so now a she has a suitable one when I am on the P/C. Thank you for bringing Gemma into my home and all the trouble you have gone to. I think we will get on very well together."

ANGEL
Angel with crown

Our family had decided to become a foster family for dogs, so we contacted Dog Rescue Newcastle. Angel came to us just before Christmas as our first foster dog; it was love at first sight. Angel didn't’t have a name so we called her Angel as she has such a sweet and loving nature and it was nearly Christmas. She quickly became part of our family, so we decided to adopt her.

Angel likes going to the beach, chasing a ball, playing tug on the rope, loves walking to school and back and is a very good sister to our other Jack Russell Gypsy. Angel has been very spoilt, as at night she has to decide whose bed to sleep on. I would recommend fostering or adopting a rescue dog as it is very rewarding.

Suzie

Here are a few photos of Suzie. She has well and truly settled in and we are loving having her live with us. Suzie is very much out of her shell and has started to be a little mischievous; which is lovely as it shows she is feeling at home.

Julian loves sharing his afternoon tea with Suzie and Suzie happily tries to levitate food out of his hands or off his plate when she has the opportunity. I am in the middle of their love in trying to not get too many bad habits started!

PHILIPPE
Phil

Philippe is a playful Jack Russell terrier dog who found a loving home with a young family with a girl and a boy to chase around the garden.

"Here are some pictures of Phillipe's first afternoon with us. As you can see, Emma settled quite well with him after a short time and now just wants to hug him all the time!"

ZOEY
Zoey

Zoey is a Jack Russell terrier who is now a much loved and spoiled companion.

"We bought Miss Zoey a new bed and collar and lead and well, everything she needs, so had to have a bit of a photo shoot! Mum and Zoey had a good nights sleep - I think there was a bit of competition on the bed for the blanket!"

SNUFFY

Snuffy

Snuffy experienced dental problems and mistreatment until he was rescued and taken into foster care. He was then adopted by a very kind and loving couple in Tasmania. They were so happy when he arrived they wrote a poem to welcome him to his forever home and created our 2009 Fund Raising Calendar. Snuffy is now enjoying all the comfort and cuddles which every dog deserves.

MAGGIE

Maggie

Maggie

Maggie is Terrier x Kelpie cross puppy whom we rescued from a local pound.

Her new family love her and sent us the following emails: "Maggie is a very smart puppy who has endeared herself to us and we hope she likes us too. She sits, stays, comes when called, lays on her rug when told to; all of course if she is not too excited, not bad for a less than 2 week stay. She knows right from wrong and is so sweet and good natured we feel very lucky.

"Maggie is delightful if not a bit naughty when she has to go back on the lead after a walk. She tries to play with our 7 year old cat, Millie, who is not the least bit interested. Millie chases Maggie who thinks it's a great game to see how close to Millie she can get without actually getting swiped. Meanwhile, our rainbow lorikeet, Charlie, is calling out and laughing as I laugh. He tells Maggie to "stay" and calls her Mags. It really is a three ring circus sometimes.

"Maggie is very sociable with people and loves to play with other dogs, the bigger the better.

Thank you again for rescuing her so we can adopt such a lovely pet and we continue to espouse the virtues of Pet Rescue."

GYPSY
Gypsy2

Gypsy was aptly named because she's had to move around quite a bit before finally finding her forever home. She is a beautiful Blue Heeler who found herself on death row at a pound at one year old. She was lucky enough to be saved by Dog Rescue Newcastle and put into foster care. There she proved to be very playful, intelligent and quick to learn. She has now been adopted by a loving family and is enjoying life on a small farm with two children for play mates.

SOPHIE

Sophie2

Gorgeous little Sophie was taken from a local pound, just before her fate was to be sealed. She has proven to be a truly good save. Sophie would be one of the most loveable little dogs I have had in foster care. When Sophie arrived she was limping badly on her back leg, and could not straighten the leg or put weight on it. A visit to the vet showed that she had been severely kicked and had her hip displaced by about an inch and a half. We have since had her operated on and now she is on the road to recovery. Sophie now lives in a loving home where she is treated like a princess and gets all the love and care she deserves.

SOXIE
Soxie 2

Soxie 1

Meet our lovely little "Soxie" - a small, female x mini pincher. She is a charming, well-mannered little girl who will fit into any household. Soxie is quiet and affectionate, she craves human company, so much so that she follows her carer around the house and even sits and waits patiently while the shower gets a good scrub (Like some men, she likes watching housework being done... haha). Soxie loves cuddles and gets along with other dogs and cats.

She runs around and prances like a little princess. She is a wonderful little dog, who deserves the loving family of which she is now a part.

JOEY
joey 1

Let me see, how can I best describe my Little Joey? I know, in one word...GORGEOUS. Wow, what a precious little man he is, all 2.4kgs of him.

Joey doesn't realise how small he is, he thinks he is a Rotti, and chases the big dogs and cats around the yard. As a watch dog, he would eat any intruder (He would never bite, he is all bark). He barks his head off at anyone coming into the yard, sometimes I have to hold his mouth closed, just to shut him up. He is so full of confidence he is amazing. But at other times all he wants to do is be carried around all day, and cries if you leave his side. I call him my 'Paris Hilton Dog' - he would be very happy being carried around town in a shoulder bag, which I am sure used to happen with him.

Joey looks to be a 'designer dog' - possibly a cross of a Pom and a Silky, he has a gorgeous cream and grey coloured coat. He enjoys a gentle brush and a bath and seems to be a "one person" dog.

BUFFY
buffy 1

Buffy was saved from Blacktown Pound. She is very shy, but comes out of her shell when she gets to know you. She seems a little frighten of men and cowers if you try to touch her head, but we are working on this issue. Buffy is only 3.1 kgs, she is tiny and petite. She loves coming into the house although she will not jump onto the lounge, unless invited. She is house trained and a really nice little girl.
Buffy would be happy with a small companion dog, but not a big dog, as she does not like large dogs. She is also not fussy about cats and sometimes gives mine a little run. She is very alert and will be a good little watch dog, letting you know if anyone is around. Buffy loves a brush, but always looks as if she needs a comb, (she is always having a bad hair day, bless her heart).

GEORGIA
Georgia1

Georgia, or Georgie Girl, is a delightful small female chihuahua dog. This is Georgia with the eight week old pups, she is not much bigger than them. Georgie is dog and cat friendly and actually had to be put in with the cats at the pound, because she was so tiny she could get out of the dog pens. She is a ball of energy and a little bit bossy with the other dogs if they try to gain your attention when she is having a nurse. She loves human companionship and is very happy to snuggle up on your knee and sleep. If Georgia wants to join you, she will find her way under any obstacle to find you. Some one who knows the personality of a Chi will understand what I am referring to. Georgie is an inside dog and will need to be the cent er of attention.

TESSA
Tessa1

Gorgeous little Tessa is a tiny little long haired Chi, who came into rescue with two delightful little pups: Tammy and Teena (now named Lilli and Chiley - see below). She was no longer wanted and she and her pups were threatened with drowning. How anyone would not want this adorable little pet is beyond comprehension, and then to say they were going to drown her pups... some people are just unbelievable. Tessa is just gorgeous and so are her pups. She is now enjoying her new, forever home.

These two Chihuahua puppies were going to be drowned in a bucket, before Dog Rescue Newcastle saved them. We took them and their mother, Tessa (above), into foster care then found loving homes for them all.

They are now named Lilli (the blonde one) and Chiley (the brunette) and have a wonderful, new life. They get plenty of love and go on lots of adventures with their Mum — and even enjoy sailing on their yacht!

TAMMIE
Tammie01

You have the pleasure of seeing our gorgeous little Tammie. And what a little dynamo this baby girl is. She is as wild as a "march hare", not much fazes this little one, she is a ball of energy and is scared of nothing. Tammie and her sister Teena were going to be drowned in a bucket, before rescue took them. Look into those loving little eyes and wonder why someone would even think of doing such a rotten thing. Their loss is our gain. There is a picture of them here with their mum, Tessa. Mum is lovely quiet little girl, and their father was also a Chihuahua. This little angel is now settled in her forever home.

MISSY
Missy1

This is our precious Missy, a Cattle X Staffy. Missy came to rescue's notice when there was a report of a dog being left in labour from 4am in the morning until 3pm in the afternoon, when rescue was finally notified to come and take her away.

Missy had passed one pup but was unable to deliver any more. She had been left for so long in agony and distress that the Vet was not sure that she would survive a Caesarean operation. Missy did survive, but unfortunately, most of her nine pups did not. The stress and toxins took their toll on most of the pups.

She is one of the most adorable natured dogs you would ever want to meet. This dog has no faults, even though she was starved, neglected and treated with untold cruelty.

Our precious little girl has now found her Forever Home. She will live out her life walking along the beach, sleeping in her new family’s bed and generally being cared for like a princess. And after what she has been through, she deserves her life of luxury.

A few tears were shed when this girl walked out the door, but they were tears of joy as well as of sadness. Missy left her foster home in beautiful condition, a far cry from how she arrived.

Pictured are her two surviving pups, Little Bull and Bear. These poor brothers were eight weeks old at the time and were lucky to survive the entire ordeal their mother had to go through. Luckily they are now safe in their Forever Homes, being cared for, treasured and treated like they deserve.

SUSIE
Susie

Susie is the most adorable, adaptable little treasure you would ever meet. This poor little angel was taken to the pound heavily pregnant and with no one to care for her. When our carer visited the pound, this poor little darling was giving birth to her pups all by herself. She was frightened, confused and had nobody to care of her. But not for long. Our carer quickly volunteered to take this girl and her babies. Susie has proven to be the most loving dog and mother. Her pups are big, healthy and well looked after. Susie’s babies are just three weeks old in this picture. There are three boys and one little girl.

All of these dogs were rescued and re-homed and are now living in a safe, loving home.(Left to right: Pauly, Harry, Billy, Chelsea).

BLAKE
Blake 1

Wow, how about this for a handsome young man? This is Blake and he is a merle coloured Koolie. This breed is one of the most intelligent dogs in the world, smarter than some people.

Blake and his brother were dumped at a local pound, where they were saved by rescue. They originally were given to us only as a stop-over, until Koolie Rescue could take them. But they were so well behaved and lovable they were invited to stay with their carer.

We found Blake a beautiful home where he could run around and spend his days being treated like a Prince!
